Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon flavoring extract (such as vanilla or peppermint)
- Food coloring in vibrant shades (blue, purple, teal)
- Rock candy sticks or string
- Optional: Edible glitter for a cosmic sparkle
Instructions
- Prepare your workspace by setting up a heat-resistant area with all ingredients and tools ready. Use a thermometer to monitor the syrup temperature.
- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine 1 1/2 cups of sugar, water, and corn syrup. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves completely. Attach a candy thermometer and cook until the mixture reaches 300°F (hard crack stage).
- Remove syrup from heat and stir in food coloring and flavor extract to create vibrant cosmic hues.
- Pour the hot syrup onto a greased baking sheet or into glass jars with the rock candy sticks submerged, ensuring they don’t touch each other. Let cool slightly before pouring to prevent splattering.
- Allow the syrup to cool at room temperature for 4–6 hours or overnight. As it cools, crystals will form, resembling Unobtanium.
- Break or trim the crystals into desired sizes. For extra sparkle, sprinkle edible glitter over the crystals. Serve or store as desired.
Notes
- Ensure the syrup reaches exactly 300°F for optimal crystal growth.
- Use vibrant food colorings for the most striking cosmic effect.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature, away from humidity.
- Wrap individual pieces with wax paper to prevent sticking during long storage.
