- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-process preferred)
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup strong black coffee (hot)
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Sift together dry ingredients in a large bowl
- Whisk wet ingredients in another bowl, then slowly mix into dry ingredients
- Divide batter evenly between two greased 9-inch round cake pans lined with parchment
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until toothpick comes out clean
- Cool in pans 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely
- Frost with chocolate frosting and decorate with Batman logo if desired

- Use high-quality cocoa powder for best flavor
- Don’t overmix the batter – stop when just combined
- Cool cakes completely before frosting
- For extra moisture, brush layers with simple syrup
