Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm water (around 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional, for garnish)
- Black sesame seeds (for a Black Panther-inspired touch)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast and sugar in warm water. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms, then knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll each into a 12-inch long, tapered rope resembling a spear tip.
- Place shaped breadsticks on the prepared baking sheet, spacing evenly.
- Beat the egg to create an egg wash. Brush tops of breadsticks with egg, sprinkle sesame seeds or black sesame seeds at the base of the spear tip.
- Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden and crispy. Remove and cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, sprinkle herbs or spices like garlic powder or paprika into the dough.
- Use a pastry brush for an even egg wash application.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days for optimal crispiness. Reheat at 350°F for 5-7 minutes to restore crunch.
