Homemade blue sky rock candy inspired by the iconic drug-lab candy in Breaking Bad—vibrant, shiny, and safe for all ages. Made with natural food coloring and simple sugar syrup, this candy is perfect for themed parties, gifts, or nostalgic snacking.

  • Total Time: 5 days 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4–6 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 3-4 drops blue food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • Pinch of cream of tartar (for coating sticks)
  • 2 wooden skewers or candy sticks

Instructions

  1. Boil water, sugar, and cream of tartar in a saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  2. Once boiling, stop stirring and let simmer for 5 minutes until mixture reaches 230°F (soft-ball stage).
  3. Remove from heat and stir in food coloring until evenly blue.
  4. Pour hot syrup into a clean, heatproof jar.
  5. Dip skewers in water, then roll loosely in granulated sugar to seed crystals. Let dry overnight.
  6. Hang skewers in the jar so they don’t touch sides or bottom.
  7. Cover jar loosely with paper towel and let sit undisturbed for 5–7 days in a cool, dry place.
  8. Once crystals form, remove skewers, let dry on parchment, then enjoy!

Notes

  • For brighter color, use gel food coloring—Liquid may dilute syrup.
  • Do not stir once boiling begins—this prevents premature crystallization.
  • For ‘Heisenberg’ style contrast, try layering a small batch with a touch of red coloring to mimic the subtle marbling from the show.
