  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 8 slices

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 2-3 tablespoons ice water
  • 1 cup vanilla pastry cream or custard (store-bought or homemade)
  • Red, blue, and white fresh fruits (strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, bananas)
  • Gel food coloring (red and blue)
  • Optional: edible gold or silver dust for decoration

Instructions

  1. In a food processor, combine the flour and powdered sugar. Add the cold diced butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add the egg yolk and 2 tablespoons of ice water. Pulse until the dough comes together. If needed, add an extra tablespoon of water.
  3. Form the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to fit a 9-inch tart pan. Carefully transfer to the pan and trim the edges.
  6. Poke the base with a fork (dock the dough) and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Let it cool completely.
  7. Color the strawberries and kiwi with red and blue gel food coloring for a vibrant effect.
  8. Slice the fruits into thin, uniform pieces for neat decoration.
  9. Spread the vanilla pastry cream evenly across the cooled tart shell.
  10. Arrange the sliced fruits in concentric circles, mimicking Captain America’s shield—red on one side, white in the middle, and blue on the other.
  11. Optional: Use edible gold or silver dust to add a metallic shimmer to enhance the patriotic theme.

Notes

  • Ensure the tart shell is completely cooled before adding the pastry cream and fruits to prevent sogginess.
  • Use fresh, firm fruits for the best appearance and taste.
  • Decorate just before serving to maintain the vibrancy of the fruit colors.
