Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups stale bread, torn into pieces (French or brioche works best)
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread: Tear stale bread into bite-sized pieces and place in a large mixing bowl. If using fresh bread, lightly toast it in the oven for 10 minutes at 300°F to dry it out slightly.
- Warm the Milk Mixture: In a medium saucepan, combine milk, heavy cream, and sugar. Heat until warm (do not boil), then stir in vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Whisk in the Eggs: In a separate bowl, whisk eggs until smooth. Slowly pour the warm milk mixture into the eggs while whisking continuously. Pour over the bread pieces and let sit for 15 minutes.
- Bake to Perfection: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish, transfer the bread mixture, and bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
- For extra richness, drizzle with caramel sauce or serve with vanilla ice cream.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
