Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound (450g) ground beef or turkey
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 jar marinara sauce
- 4-6 sturdy sub rolls or baguettes
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)
- Olive oil for brushing
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, combine ground meat, bread crumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
- Shape the mixture into 12 evenly-sized meatballs.
- Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through and browned.
- While the meatballs are baking, warm the marinara sauce in a saucepan over medium heat. Add cooked meatballs into the sauce and let simmer for 10 minutes, ensuring they are coated with the sauce.
- Cut the sub rolls lengthwise, then brush the insides with olive oil. Toast them lightly in the oven or on a grill for extra crunch.
- Place 3-4 meatballs inside each bread roll, spoon over additional marinara sauce, and sprinkle generously with shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Return the assembled subs to the oven for 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Notes
- For extra flavor, consider adding spicy marinara or different cheese blends to customize your subs.
- To make the meatballs healthier, substitute lean ground turkey or chicken.
- Prepare the meatballs ahead of time and reheat when needed for convenience.
