  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4-6 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef or turkey
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 jar marinara sauce
  • 4-6 sturdy sub rolls or baguettes
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)
  • Olive oil for brushing

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, combine ground meat, bread crumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into 12 evenly-sized meatballs.
  3. Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through and browned.
  4. While the meatballs are baking, warm the marinara sauce in a saucepan over medium heat. Add cooked meatballs into the sauce and let simmer for 10 minutes, ensuring they are coated with the sauce.
  5. Cut the sub rolls lengthwise, then brush the insides with olive oil. Toast them lightly in the oven or on a grill for extra crunch.
  6. Place 3-4 meatballs inside each bread roll, spoon over additional marinara sauce, and sprinkle generously with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  7. Return the assembled subs to the oven for 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, consider adding spicy marinara or different cheese blends to customize your subs.
  • To make the meatballs healthier, substitute lean ground turkey or chicken.
  • Prepare the meatballs ahead of time and reheat when needed for convenience.
