Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large tart green apples, peeled and chopped
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 package pre-made puff pastry or pie crusts
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Optional: red food coloring or cherry jam for extra “poison” effect
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine chopped apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Stir until well coated.
- Set aside to allow flavors to meld for about 10 minutes.
- Roll out the puff pastry or pie crusts on a floured surface. Cut into squares approximately 4Ă—4 inches.
- Place a generous spoonful of apple filling in the center of each square.
- Fold the pastry over the filling to form a triangle or rectangle, sealing the edges by pressing with a fork.
- Brush the tops with beaten egg for a golden finish and optional red food coloring for added “poison” effect.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place the turnovers on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and flaky.
- Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- For longer storage, freeze individually on a baking sheet, then transfer to a zip-top bag.
- Reheat in an air fryer or oven for crispy perfection.
- To enhance the “poison” look, use red food coloring or cherry jam as decoration.
