- 1 can (5 oz) tuna in water or oil, drained
- 2 slices of hearty bread (sourdough or multigrain)
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1/4 cup chopped celery
- 1/4 cup chopped red onion
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 slices of cheddar cheese or Swiss cheese
- 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
Optional flavor enhancements include spicy jalapeños or hot sauce for an extra kick.
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, chopped celery, and red onion. Mix well until evenly incorporated.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Spread the tuna mixture generously onto one slice of bread.
- Top with a slice of cheese and then place the second slice of bread on top.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter or margarine.
- Grill the sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and the cheese melts.
- Cut the sandwich in half and serve hot with a side salad or crispy chips.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet or toaster oven for best results.
- Avoid freezing, as bread may become soggy upon thawing.
