- 2 cups of pre-cooked cornmeal (arepa harina)
- 1 1/2 cups of warm water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup shredded white cheese (queso fresco or mozzarella)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal and salt.
- Gradually pour in the warm water while mixing until the dough is soft but not sticky.
- Incorporate the shredded cheese into the dough, kneading gently to distribute evenly.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each into a flat, round disc about 1/2 inch thick.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Cook the arepas for 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy outside.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- Reheat in an air fryer or oven for crispy results.
- Avoid freezing as the texture may change.
