Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound (450g) ground beef or a mix of beef and pork
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 jar marinara sauce (about 24 oz)
- 4-6 hoagie rolls or baguettes
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the meatballs: In a large mixing bowl, combine ground meat, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, minced garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until well blended.
- Form the meatballs: Roll the mixture into 1.5-inch balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cook the meatballs: Bake at 400°F (200°C) for about 15-20 minutes until browned and cooked through. Alternatively, use an air fryer for faster results.
- Simmer the sauce: In a large skillet, heat marinara sauce until simmering. Add cooked meatballs into the sauce, allowing them to soak up flavors for about 10 minutes.
- Assemble the sub sandwiches: Slice the rolls lengthwise, load with several meatballs, spoon sauce over, and sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Broil and serve: Place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler for 2-3 minutes until cheese melts. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add red pepper flakes or additional herbs to the sauce.
- You can prepare and cook the meatballs ahead of time for convenience.
- Store leftovers separately in airtight containers and reheat before assembling the sandwich.
