Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 lbs fresh tomatoes, chopped (or two 28-ounce cans of crushed tomatoes)
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound Italian sausage, removed from casings
- 1 cup dry red wine
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned, around 8-10 minutes, then drain excess fat.
- Deglaze the pot with red wine, scraping up brown bits from the bottom. Let it reduce for 2-3 minutes, then add tomatoes, basil, parsley, oregano, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, reduce heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for at least 3 hours, stirring occasionally. If the sauce thickens too much, add water or broth to thin it.
Notes
- For a smoother sauce, consider using an immersion blender after simmering.
- Add other vegetables like bell peppers or carrots for extra flavor.
- Experiment with different meats like pork shoulder for a richer taste.
- A splash of balsamic vinegar can enhance sweetness and acidity.
- Adjust red pepper flakes for your preferred spicy level.
