Goodfellas Sunday Sauce is a labor of love that captures the essence of traditional Italian-American cuisine. Simmered for hours, this ultimate homemade pasta sauce blends rich flavors of ground beef, Italian sausage, fresh herbs, and red wine, creating a comforting and unforgettable meal for family gatherings.

  • Total Time: 3 hours 15 minutes to 6 hours 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6-8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 lbs fresh tomatoes, chopped (or two 28-ounce cans of crushed tomatoes)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, removed from casings
  • 1 cup dry red wine
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  2. Add ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned, around 8-10 minutes, then drain excess fat.
  3. Deglaze the pot with red wine, scraping up brown bits from the bottom. Let it reduce for 2-3 minutes, then add tomatoes, basil, parsley, oregano, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.
  4. Bring the sauce to a simmer, reduce heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for at least 3 hours, stirring occasionally. If the sauce thickens too much, add water or broth to thin it.

Notes

  • For a smoother sauce, consider using an immersion blender after simmering.
  • Add other vegetables like bell peppers or carrots for extra flavor.
  • Experiment with different meats like pork shoulder for a richer taste.
  • A splash of balsamic vinegar can enhance sweetness and acidity.
  • Adjust red pepper flakes for your preferred spicy level.
