Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- ¾ cup buttermilk (or milk with a splash of vinegar)
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Food coloring (red, white, and blue for the target design)
- Powdered sugar or glaze (optional for finishing)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a donut pan or muffin tin for baking.
- Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Combine the wet ingredients: In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add the sugar, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
- Combine the wet and dry mixtures: Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry, stirring gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Divide and color: Divide the batter into three bowls. Add red food coloring to one, blue to another, and leave the third as plain white.
- Assemble the donuts: Using a piping bag or spoons, layer the batter in the donut pan—white in the center, surrounded by the red, and blue rings on the outer edge for a target look.
- Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Cool and decorate: Allow the donuts to cool completely. Decorate with powdered sugar glaze or frosting, and add sprinkles or edible glitter for a bullseye effect.
Notes
- Ensure to evenly distribute the colors for a perfect bullseye pattern.
- Use high-quality food coloring for vibrant colors.
- Allow donuts to cool before decorating for best results.
