Ingredients
Scale
- 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Fresh burger buns
- Assorted toppings: lettuce, tomato slices, red onion, pickles, cheese (optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, mash the drained black beans with a fork or masher until mostly smooth but still textured.
- Add breadcrumbs, chopped onion, garlic, cumin, paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until ingredients are well incorporated.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a round, flat patty.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Place the bean patties into the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
- Toast burger buns lightly. Layer the bottom bun with lettuce, add the crispy bean patty, and layer with tomato slices, red onion, pickles, and cheese if desired.
- Top with the remaining bun and serve immediately for a fresh Bronx-style bean burger experience.
Notes
- To make the burgers vegan, omit cheese or use plant-based cheese options.
- Ensure the oil is hot for maximum crispiness of the patties.
- You can bake the patties in the oven at 400°F (200°C) for a healthier alternative.
- Try experimenting with different beans like kidney beans or chickpeas for variation.
