Ingredients
Scale
- 4 ripe but firm pears (Bartlett or Bosc work beautifully)
- 2 cups of non-alcoholic red wine or grape juice (for a wine-like flavor)
- 1/2 cup of honey or maple syrup
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3-4 whole cloves
- 1 vanilla bean or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 lemon, juiced
Instructions
- Peel the pears, leaving the stems intact for an elegant presentation.
- Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice over the pears to prevent browning.
- In a large saucepan, combine the non-alcoholic wine or grape juice, honey, cinnamon stick, cloves, vanilla, and lemon juice. Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Gently place the pears into the simmering liquid, ensuring they are fully submerged.
- Reduce the heat to low and cover the pan. Let the pears simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until tender but not falling apart.
- Turn the pears occasionally to ensure even coloring and flavor absorption.
- Remove the pears carefully and set them aside to cool slightly.
- Optional: Increase the heat and simmer the poaching liquid until it thickens into a syrup.
- Serve the pears drizzled with the syrup or alongside whipped cream or mascarpone for added richness.
Notes
- For a more intense flavor, add a splash of orange zest or star anise during simmering.
- Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of honey or maple syrup.
- Ensure the pears are fully submerged in the syrup for safe storage.
