Ingredients
Scale
- 4 to 5 medium-sized Empire apples (or Granny Smith as a substitute)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 package of pre-made pie crusts (or homemade crust for a more authentic touch)
- 1 egg, beaten (for brushing)
- 1 tablespoon sugar (for topping)
Instructions
- Peel, core, and slice the Empire apples. Toss apple slices with lemon juice in a large bowl. Add sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Mix thoroughly to coat evenly.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out one pie crust and fit into a 9-inch pie dish. Pour apple filling into the crust, smoothing the top. Cover with the second crust, trim edges, and crimp to seal. Cut small slits for steam.
- Brush the top crust with beaten egg. Sprinkle with sugar for a golden crust. Add decorative vent strips or lattice pattern if desired.
- Bake on the middle rack for 45-50 minutes until crust is golden and filling bubbles. Cool for at least 2 hours to set filling.
Notes
- For a more authentic presentation, decorate the top with lattice strips or other vintage-inspired designs.
- Use high-quality apples like Empire or Granny Smith for best flavor and texture.
- Reheat slices in the oven or microwave for a warm treat.
