Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups of pre-cooked white or yellow cornmeal (arepa flour)
- 1 ¼ cups of warm water
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 2 tablespoons of melted butter or vegetable oil
- Optional: shredded cheese, shredded beef or chicken, fresh toppings like avocado, sour cream, and salsa
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the pre-cooked cornmeal and salt. Gradually add warm water, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Knead until smooth and pliable. Cover and let rest for 5 minutes.
- Divide the dough into equal portions and shape each into a ball. Flatten into discs about ¾ inch thick with your hands to achieve the classic modern family look.
- Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Lightly oil the surface. Cook each side for 4-5 minutes until golden brown. Finish in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes for extra crispiness.
- Once cooked, slice the arepas open and fill with cheese, meats, or toppings of your choice. Serve hot for a delicious Colombian experience.
Notes
- Use freshly prepared or pre-cooked maize flour for the best taste and texture.
- Avoid over-flattening; keep the discs about ¾ inch thick for optimal crispiness.
- Mix shredded cheese into the dough for added flavor.
- Customize with different fillings and toppings for variety and presentation.
