  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour: 3 cups
  • Granulated sugar: 2 cups
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: ½ cup
  • Baking powder: 2 teaspoons
  • Baking soda: 1 teaspoon
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Eggs: 2 large
  • Milk: 1 cup
  • Vegetable oil: ½ cup
  • Vanilla extract: 2 teaspoons
  • Boiling water: 1 cup
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • For the frosting:
  • Unsalted butter: 1 cup, softened
  • Powdered sugar: 4 cups
  • Milk: ¼ cup
  • Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat until well combined. Gradually add boiling water, mixing until smooth. Divide batter into bowls and add food coloring.
  3. Pour each colored batter into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack.
  4. For frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until fluffy. Add milk and vanilla, and mix until smooth. Level cooled cake layers if necessary, assemble with frosting between layers, and frost the entire cake.
  5. Decorate the cake with sprinkles and chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.
