Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups of pre-cooked cornmeal
- 2 ½ cups warm water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Oil for frying
- Toppings: cheese, avocado, meats, or your choice of fillings
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the pre-cooked cornmeal and salt. Gradually add the warm water and mix thoroughly until a soft and pliable dough forms.
- Divide the dough into equal portions and flatten each ball to form a disc about ½ inch thick.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat, add oil, and place the shaped Arepas in the skillet. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the Arepas from the skillet, let them cool slightly, slice in half, and fill with your choice of toppings.
Notes
- Store leftover Arepas in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat in a skillet or toaster; avoid microwaving to keep the texture.
- Arepas can be frozen uncooked on a baking sheet, then transferred to an airtight container once frozen.
- Make sure to check product labels for gluten-free options if needed.
