Ingredients
Scale
- 3 ½ cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
- 1 ¼ cups warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (such as rosemary, thyme, and parsley), chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1 teaspoon honey or sugar
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, honey (or sugar), and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, garlic powder, and chopped herbs.
- Pour the activated yeast mixture and olive oil into the dry ingredients. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
- Transfer dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Punch down the dough, shape it into a round loaf or baguette shape, and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Optional: brush with olive oil and sprinkle herbs.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
Notes
- Use fresh herbs for a vibrant flavor, or dried herbs if fresh are unavailable, reducing the amount by half.
- For a crustier bread, place a pan of water on the bottom rack during baking to create steam.
- Store cooled bread tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or in an airtight container. For longer storage, freeze slices separately and reheat as needed.
