Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp golden syrup or corn syrup
- 1 tsp baking soda
- Optional: Food coloring (red for the Squid Game effect!)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and water over medium heat. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves completely. Avoid stirring too much to prevent crystallization.
- Once the sugar has dissolved, add the golden syrup (or corn syrup) and stir gently. Continue heating the mixture until it reaches a deep golden-brown color (around 300°F/150°C on a candy thermometer).
- Remove the saucepan from heat and quickly whisk in the baking soda. The mixture will foam up dramatically—this is what creates the honeycomb’s airy texture! Stir just until combined.
- Immediately pour the foamy mixture onto a parchment-lined baking tray. Spread it gently with a spatula if needed, but avoid pressing too hard to keep the air bubbles intact. Let it cool completely before breaking or cutting into pieces.
Notes
- Work quickly when adding baking soda—the reaction happens fast!
- Use a candy thermometer for precise caramelization.
- For an authentic Squid Game touch, press a simple shape (like a circle or triangle) into the candy before it fully hardens.
