A rustic, golden-brown coffee cake with a crumbly streusel topping, sitting on a wooden cutting board with a steaming mug of black coffee and a half-eaten slice on a vintage paper plate. The background hints at Hawkins, Indiana — soft-focus posters of Starcourt Mall, a flickering fluorescent light, and a faint rain streak on a window.

A moist, spiced coffee cake inspired by Chief Jim Hopper’s quiet morning rituals in Hawkins. Features a tender crumb, warm spices, and a buttery streusel topping — best enjoyed with a mug of strong black coffee.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In another bowl, beat butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg, then sour cream and vanilla. Mix well.
  4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to butter mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  5. Spoon half the batter into the pan. Sprinkle with half the streusel (see below), then top with remaining batter and streusel.
  6. Bake 45–55 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pan before removing.

Notes

  • For best flavor, use room-temperature ingredients.
  • Streusel: Mix ¼ cup flour, ¼ cup brown sugar, 2 tbsp cold butter (cut into peas), and ½ tsp cinnamon until crumbly.
  • Dust with powdered sugar before serving if desired — just like Hopper’s rare “treat yourself” moments.
