Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pink food coloring (gel preferred)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- Drop of pink food coloring
- Sprinkles or colored sugar for decoration
Instructions
- Activate the yeast by combining warm milk, a teaspoon of sugar, and the yeast in a small bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the eggs, vanilla, melted butter, and the activated yeast mixture.
- Mix well until a soft dough forms. Gradually add pink food coloring until the dough is vividly pink.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 to 2 hours or until doubled in size.
- After rising, punch down the dough and roll out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into round shapes with a donut cutter or glass. Use a smaller cutter for the centers if desired.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep skillet to 350°F (175°C). Fry donuts in batches for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Transfer donuts to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar, milk, and pink food coloring. Dip the cooled donuts into the glaze and decorate with sprinkles. Allow to set before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature for evenly golden donuts.
- Pink gel food coloring yields a vibrant hue with less dye needed.
- For a healthier version, consider baking the donuts at 375°F (190°C) for 10-12 minutes.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 24 hours for best freshness.
