Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Hamburger buns
Instructions
- In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and yellow mustard. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let simmer for at least 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Spoon the sloppy joes mixture onto hamburger buns. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- Add a Kick: For a spicier version, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the sauce mixture.
- Sweeten it Up: If you prefer a sweeter flavor, add an extra tablespoon of brown sugar or a touch of maple syrup.
- Veggie Boost: Sneak in some finely chopped vegetables like carrots, celery, or zucchini for added nutrients.
- Bread Variety: While hamburger buns are classic, feel free to use other types of bread like slider buns, brioche rolls, or even toasted sourdough.
- Cheese Please: Add a slice of your favorite cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or provolone) for an extra layer of flavor.
