Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large tart apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 package of puff pastry or homemade strudel dough
- 1 egg, beaten (for glazing)
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and raisins. Mix well and set aside to macerate for 15 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- If using store-bought puff pastry, thaw according to package instructions. Roll it out slightly to smooth edges.
- Spread breadcrumbs evenly over the pastry, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
- Place the apple mixture on one side of the pastry, fold over, and seal the edges with beaten egg.
- Transfer the assembled strudel to the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top with egg wash for a golden finish.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
Notes
- Ensure the pastry is fully thawed before rolling to prevent tears.
- You can add chopped nuts or a splash of lemon juice for extra flavor.
- Serving warm enhances the aroma and taste.
- Dust with powdered sugar just before serving for an elegant presentation.
