Ingredients
Scale
- 1 bottle (750ml) of full-bodied red wine (such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon) – Check out quality red wines here
- 1/4 cup of brandy or dark rum – for added depth
- 1/4 cup of simple syrup or honey (adjust sweetness as desired)
- 1 cup of fresh blackberries or blueberries – choose organic for enhanced flavor
- 1 orange, sliced into rounds
- 1 lemon, sliced into rounds
- 1 pomegranate, seeds extracted – for a splash of wild color
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1-star anise (optional, for a hint of spice)
- Ice cubes or chilled sparkling water (for serving)
Instructions
- Prepare the Fruit: Slice the orange and lemon into thin rounds, and gently muddle the berries to release their juices. Extract pomegranate seeds and set aside.
- Mix the Base: In a large pitcher, combine the red wine, brandy (or dark rum), and simple syrup. Stir well until all ingredients are blended smoothly.
- Combine and Infuse: Add the sliced fruits, pomegranate seeds, cinnamon sticks, and star anise to the mixture. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
- Serve: Fill glasses with ice or pour over chilled sparkling water for a bubbly finish. Garnish with fresh mint if desired. For an extra touch, add a splash of orange liqueur just before serving.
Notes
- Use high-quality full-bodied red wine for the best flavor.
- Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of honey or simple syrup.
- For a stronger spicy aroma, add more cinnamon sticks or star anise.
- This sangria tastes best when infused overnight but can be enjoyed after 2 hours of chilling.
