Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until creamy and light.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing thoroughly.
- Gradually incorporate the flour and a pinch of salt, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
- Divide the dough into two portions, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out one portion of dough to about ¼ inch thickness.
- Use a lute-shaped cookie cutter (or a custom template) to cut out the cookies. If unavailable, shape with a knife carefully.
- Transfer the cutouts onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Repeat with the second dough portion.
- Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until edges are golden.
- Allow cookies to cool on a wire rack.
- Decorate with royal icing or fondant to create strings, details, or musical notes fitting the lute design.
