Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Food coloring gels in purple, black, and white
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: Edible glitter or shimmer dust for magical effects
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar until fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing well until combined.
- Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
- Divide the dough into three equal portions, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
- Once chilled, knead food coloring gels into each dough portion—using purple, black, and white for a striking effect.
- Roll out each colored dough into rectangles about ¼ inch thick on a lightly floured surface.
- Stack the colored rectangles, creating a layered effect, and gently press them together.
- Roll the layered dough into a tight log or braid to form a swirl pattern. Wrap in plastic and chill for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Slice the chilled dough into ¼-inch thick cookies using a sharp knife.
- Place slices on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them adequately.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are lightly golden, then cool on a wire rack.
Notes
- Chill the dough thoroughly to prevent colors from bleeding during baking.
- Use a sharp knife for cleaner swirl cuts.
- Decorate with edible shimmer or glitter for added magical effect.
