Twilight Forks High School Apple Turnovers are the perfect blend of flaky pastry and juicy cinnamon-spiced apples. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, these irresistible turnovers make an excellent dessert or sweet snack, ideal for any occasion. Enjoy warm or at room temperature, topped with powdered sugar or a drizzle of caramel for added delight.

  • Total Time: 35-40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 turnovers

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large tart apples (Granny Smith or Fuji)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 package of puff pastry sheets (thawed)
  • 1 egg (beaten for egg wash)
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and dice the apples into small cubes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the apples with lemon juice, sugar, and cinnamon. Mix well and set aside to let the flavors meld.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut into squares (about 4-5 inches each).
  5. Place a spoonful of the apple filling in the center of each square.
  6. Brush the edges with the beaten egg. Fold the pastry over to form a triangle and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
  7. Place the turnovers on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with more beaten egg for a shiny finish.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • For added flavor, sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg or vanilla extract into the apple filling.
  • To make it gluten-free, substitute with store-bought gluten-free pastry sheets.
  • For a crispier crust, ensure not to overfill the turnovers and use a proper sealing technique.
