Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large tart apples (Granny Smith or Fuji)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 package of puff pastry sheets (thawed)
- 1 egg (beaten for egg wash)
- Optional: powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Peel, core, and dice the apples into small cubes.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the apples with lemon juice, sugar, and cinnamon. Mix well and set aside to let the flavors meld.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut into squares (about 4-5 inches each).
- Place a spoonful of the apple filling in the center of each square.
- Brush the edges with the beaten egg. Fold the pastry over to form a triangle and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
- Place the turnovers on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with more beaten egg for a shiny finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
- For added flavor, sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg or vanilla extract into the apple filling.
- To make it gluten-free, substitute with store-bought gluten-free pastry sheets.
- For a crispier crust, ensure not to overfill the turnovers and use a proper sealing technique.
