  • Total Time: 30 mins
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz spaghetti
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook spaghetti until al dente, reserving 1/2 cup of pasta water.
  2. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté garlic and onion until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and sugar. Simmer 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Toss the cooked pasta with the sauce, adding pasta water as needed to reach desired consistency. Stir in fresh basil.
  5. Serve with grated Parmesan on top and a drizzle of olive oil.

Notes

  • Salt the pasta water generously to flavor the noodles.
  • Reserve pasta water to loosen the sauce if needed.
  • You can add cooked ground beef or sausage if desired, but this recipe is delicious as a vegetarian option.
