Ingredients

  • 2 lb ground beef (900 g)
  • 1/2 lb ground pork (225 g)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 lb potatoes (900 g), peeled and cut
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup milk or cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together beef, pork, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, onion, garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire, thyme, salt, and pepper until just combined.
  3. Shape into a loaf on a lined baking sheet or loaf pan.
  4. Bake 45–60 minutes, until an internal thermometer reads 160Β°F (70Β°C).
  5. Meanwhile, simmer peeled potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain and mash with butter and milk. Season to taste.
  6. Glaze the loaf with a little extra ketchup during the last 5–10 minutes if desired and rest 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with mashed potatoes.
