- 2 lb ground beef (900 g)
- 1/2 lb ground pork (225 g)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 lb potatoes (900 g), peeled and cut
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup milk or cream
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together beef, pork, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, onion, garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire, thyme, salt, and pepper until just combined.
- Shape into a loaf on a lined baking sheet or loaf pan.
- Bake 45β60 minutes, until an internal thermometer reads 160Β°F (70Β°C).
- Meanwhile, simmer peeled potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain and mash with butter and milk. Season to taste.
- Glaze the loaf with a little extra ketchup during the last 5β10 minutes if desired and rest 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with mashed potatoes.
Notes
- The mixture can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated; bake before serving.
- For a richer glaze, mix ketchup with a splash of brown sugar and mustard.
- Mashed potatoes can be streamlined with roasted garlic for extra depth.
- Leftovers store well in the fridge for up to 3 days.
